Do a little science experiment tonight. Get a glass and fill it with water. Note where the top of the water rests, and just let it sit untouched in a room. After a few days, you’ll see that the water will escape the cup. Not because of a leak or because someone took a drink, but because of a natural occurrence is known as evaporation.
I wonder if people experience evaporation in a spiritual sense. People sit too long and too far from the wellspring of God’s presence, God’s Word and God’s people, and they begin to lose spiritual substance. They feel run down, depleted, angry, impatient, and fearful. They find their spiritual cup almost empty and end up doing things they would never have done normally.
If people would only turn to the Source of Living Water! He is the One who fills our spiritual cup again, and again, and again! It’s His presence and power in us that makes overcoming sin easy. It’s His Spirit in us that allows us to echo His love, His will, and His voice.
Take a moment and read Isaiah, chapter 55 today. It begins with the Lord calling to us by saying, “Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink….” The benefits to those who come to the Lord are out of this world!
Whether it is spiritual evaporation, dehydration of hope or you’re just planning weary—Jesus is the refreshing you need. He is the creator of Heaven and Earth and the River of Eternal Life.
“On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given because Jesus was not yet glorified” (John 7:37-39)
